Petros
Papadakis has become a very popular sports talk radio host as well
as color commentator on television for the Pac 10. His popularity
continues to grow in the Southern California Area. Despite all
of his success, he had a very serious problem. He couldn’t get
a good night’s sleep!
When Petros came to AirCare, he indicated that his snoring had
become so terrible that his girlfriend hadn’t been able to sleep
in the same room for nearly a year. He had very dark rings under
his eyes, and those around him commented that he was always “on
edge”. These are all signs of sleep deprivation from a common
disorder called Sleep Apnea.
Sleep Apnea is caused when a person falls asleep and the tissue
in the upper airway collapses initially causing snoring and eventually
a complete closure of the upper airway. Most people wake
up abruptly feeling like they are choking or gasping for air. Petros
was suffering from this condition, and he was not aware that there
was treatment for this very common disease. It is reported
that 2 out of every 10 Americans suffer from Sleep Apnea. This
sleep disorder is more common in humans than Diabetes or Hypertension,
yet it goes highly undiagnosed.
The bed partner also suffers when a person has Sleep Apnea, because
of the noise associated with the snoring and choking sounds during
the night.
Petros inquired “What happens if I don’t do anything
about this?”
The answer is well documented. The risks are:
- - Heart Attack
- - Stroke
- - Hypertension
- - Depression
- - Automobile and/or work related accidents
- - Headaches
- - Daytime fatigue
- - Weight gain
- - Sexual dysfunction
After hearing that list, Petros knew he had to do something about
it right away. AirCare Home Medical provided Petros with a CPAP
(Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. He uses this machine
when he sleeps, and it is the GOLD STANDARD for the treatment of
snoring and choking from Sleep Apnea. There currently is not a
surgical procedure with a good success rate to fully eliminate
Sleep Apnea, so the CPAP is definitely the best treatment option.
Did it work? You bet it did. After just a couple of weeks using
his CPAP, Petros reported:
- - His girlfriend was able to move back into
bed with him without elbowing him for snoring. He doesn’t snore
anymore!
- - Petros is no longer feeling tired all day
long and his energy level has been much improved.
- - Petros no longer has the dark rings under
his eyes.
- - Petros’ co-workers have all commented that
his personality really changed for the better and he seemed to
be much more relaxed and not so much on edge.
- - Now Petros can’t sleep without his CPAP
So now the question is, how about you? Ask yourself these questions:
- - Do you Snore?
- - Do you choke during the night?
- - Does your bed partner complain about your
snoring and choking during the night?
- - Do you feel fatigued during the day?
- - Do you ever fall asleep at the wheel of
your car?
- - Do you suffer from headaches during the
day?
